Tsugi Ashi

Tsugi ashi, shuffle stepping, is when you move one foot forward, drawing the other foot up to meet it, and then stepping again with the first foot.

This can be done forwards, mae tsugi ashi; backwards, ushiro tsugi ashi, or to the site, yoko tsugi ashi.

Note: your feet should never cross while doing tsugi ashi, shuffle stepping. This is a primary way of moving in randori, free practice, and shiai, competition.
